Al Capone
Born on January 17, 1899 Al Capone or Alphonse Capone was the fourth child of a couple from Naples, Italy. After dropping out of the sixth grade Capone joined a street game by the name of James Street Boys; run by Johnny Torrio. Quickly after Capone had joined the gang he was slashed on the left check by a rival, he thus donned the name 'Scarface'.
In 1909 Torrio moved to New York from Chicago to run a brothel business, in 1919 invited Capone to help run his business. Soon after Capone's joining of the business Torrio's boss, Big Jim Colosimo, was assassinated making way for Torrio to lead the business. In 1920 the Eighteenth Amendment was in motion, thus prohibiting the transportation, position and sale of liquor; the motion of prohibition sprouted numerous bootlegging operations. After five years of controlling the business Torrio retired passing on his legacy to Capone. Capone's reputation for being the most notorious gangster in American history began to sprout; Capone ran gambling operations, prostitution rackets, bootlegging rackets and expanded his territory by killing his rivals. From these rackets Capone's approximate wealth in 1927 was $100,000,000 US dollars (Britannica, 2013).
From 1929 to 1913 Capone had been serving time in jail on and off for the concealment of deadly weapons and other minor offenses. Meanwhile, in the past years the United States Treasury Department was developing evidence on Capone for tax evasion. In addition to Capone his brother, Ralph 'Bottles' Capone, Jake 'Greasy Thumb' Guzik, Frank Nitti were all subjects of committing tax evasion crimes (FBI, 2010). Al Capone was subsequently convicted for tax evasion on June 16th, 1931. He began his eleven year sentence in federal prison on November 24th of the same year.
