"Prohibition." History. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 12 Nov. 2013. <http://www.history.com/topics/prohibition>.
This article on Prohibition was published on the History Channel’s website. As the title suggests the article provides information on the ratification of the 18th amendment which banned the transportation, sale and use of alcoholic beverages. The origin of this source is the History Channel’s website, History.com. Although there is no known author to this source it is still credible as it was published by the History Channel. Even though the purpose of the article is not stated it is easily assumed that the purpose is to educate students, adults and others about the Prohibition Era in the United States. The document educates the audience of prohibition and it’s effects on the United States of America during the time of the prohibition. This information is supported credible facts of how the American people acted during the prohibition. As the author is anonymous we are not able to gather much knowledge on him/her. However, from this article one can see that the author is an unbiased character who created this article to educate those interested in the Prohibition Era. From the article we can also see that this was created in modern times (the events were from past) from an unbiased viewpoint. From this piece we are able to tell that the author provides the audience with an unbiased third person perspective to present the information in the most informative way. From this document we are unable to see the stories of the general population and or the police as this is from a third person point of view. We are also easily able to verify the content of this piece as it is from a very large topic in American history. I believe that the author purposely leaves out the viewpoint of the United States government at the time to provide the reader with an unbiased point of view. This is because if the viewer were to read about the government’s choice to enact prohibition then they may possibly agree and thus be biased on the subject.
Prohibition-Era Cartoon. Photography. Encyclopædia Britannica Image Quest. Web. 13 Nov 2013. <http://quest.eb.com/images/139_2014620>
This political cartoon exhibits the political and social unrest in the United States of America due to the enactment of Prohibition. The original origin of this source is unknown, however it has been added to the Encyclopædia Britannica Image Quest website. This website is specifically designed to cater to high school students who are finding images for certain subjects. Little detail is given on the author, date of creation and date of publication; above ‘Old Man Prohibition’ is the name Puck, however unknown this may be the author’s first or surname. Provided with the image source was a caption that summarizes the intended purpose of the political cartoon, “Political cartoon showing Old Man Prohibition receiving ‘a cold reception everywhere.’” From this source one is able to conclude that the author most likely created this source to gather an opposition against Prohibition. The author chose to present in this format as the newspaper presented an easy way to distribute information as well as being the most popular mode of communication at the time. As well with the above, an image source would be able to bridge the gap between language barriers. The intended audience that this was directed to was most likely the citizens and government of the United States as it shows social unrest due to the 18th amendment. From this piece we are able to tell that the author was against the enactment of the 18th amendment as this piece presents a very negative bias towards prohibition. From the piece one is also able to conclude that the time period of the piece was most likely the 1920’s as this was the decade in which prohibition was enacted; controversies from this piece are easily seen as ‘Old Man Prohibition’ is ‘receiving a cold reception’ from everyone, everyone being the States. From this source one is not able to tell the view point of the United States’ government; as it’s creation was to convince people that Prohibition was a very bad decision on the government’s part. As the origin of this source is unclear it is difficult to accurately verify the content of this source. Due to it’s unclear origin it is possible that this source has been made in modern times to represent an event that occurred in the past.
